1. "End" – When Something Naturally Stops

The verb end is often used when something stops by itself or reaches its natural conclusion. We use end for things like events, performances, relationships, and time-based activities.

✅ Examples:

The movie ends at 9 p.m. (The movie has a natural conclusion.)

The meeting ended after two hours.

Their friendship ended last year.



2. "Finish" – When Someone Completes Something

The verb finish is used when someone actively completes a task or process. It emphasizes the idea of completing an action.

✅ Examples:


I finished my homework before dinner. (I completed the task.)

She finished reading the book.

We finished the project on time.



3. When Can We Use Both "End" and "Finish"?

Sometimes, both words can be used, but with slightly different meanings.

✅ Examples:


The class ends at 10 a.m. / The class finishes at 10 a.m. (End focuses on when it stops naturally; finish suggests the lesson has been completed.)

He ended his speech with a joke. / He finished his speech with a joke. (End emphasizes how he concluded it; finish suggests the speech was completed as a task.)
