🌟 Grammar Drops: Question Tags Made Easy!
Ever wondered how to keep a conversation going smoothly in English?
Question tags are a super handy way to do that — and they’re easier than you might think!
✨ What Are Question Tags?
Question tags are those short questions we add at the end of a sentence, usually to check or confirm something.
👉 You're coming to the party, aren’t you?
👉 She doesn’t like coffee, does she?
They’re like little "conversation nudges" — inviting the other person to agree, confirm, or simply keep talking.
🧠 How Do Question Tags Work?
Here's the golden rule:
If the main sentence is positive, the tag is negative.
If the main sentence is negative, the tag is positive.
✅ Positive sentence → Negative tag
- He is a good singer, isn’t he?
- You know the answer, don’t you?
❌ Negative sentence → Positive tag
- You don’t like sushi, do you?
- She hasn’t called yet, has she?
🕵️♂️ What About the Verb?
Use the auxiliary verb from the sentence in the tag. If there’s no auxiliary verb, use do/does/did.
🔸 They work hard, don’t they?
🔸 She went to Paris, didn’t she?
⚠️ Special Cases
1. With "I am"
- I’m late, aren’t I? (Yes, this is the correct form!)
2. With Imperatives (Commands)
- Open the door, will you?
- Let’s go for a walk, shall we?
💬 Intonation Tip
- Rising intonation (your voice goes up) = You're really asking.
→ You didn’t like it, did you? (You’re not sure.) - Falling intonation (your voice goes down) = You're just confirming.
→ It’s a beautiful day, isn’t it? (You expect agreement.)
