🟡 Grammar Drops: Nouns, Verbs & Adjectives with -ing

 by Sergio Viula

Did you know that the same -ing word can be a noun, a verb, or an adjective in English? Let’s break it down in a simple way! 💧✨

✅ 1. -ing as a Verb (Present Continuous)

We use -ing forms in the present continuous tense:

🔹 I am reading a book.
🔹 She is cooking dinner.

Here, reading and cooking are part of the verb. The action is happening now!

✅ 2. -ing as a Noun (Gerund)

Sometimes, the -ing form is used as a noun. We call it a gerund.

🔹 Reading is fun.
🔹 Swimming is good exercise.

👉 These are activities used as things (nouns). They can be the subject or object of a sentence.

Example:
🔹 I love dancing. (object of the verb love)

✅ 3. -ing as an Adjective

Some -ing words describe nouns. They tell us about the feeling something gives us.

🔹 It’s a boring movie.
🔹 What an exciting game!
🔹 That’s a surprising result!

👉 These words answer: What kind of movie/game/result?
They describe things – just like adjectives!

💡 TIP: One -ing form, different jobs!

Let’s look at "running":

🔸 Verb: I am running to school. (action now)
