Grammar Drops: Simple Past – Regular Verbs
💡 What is the Simple Past?
The simple past tense is used to talk about actions that happened and finished in the past. We often use it with words like yesterday, last night, two days ago, in 2020, etc.
🛠️ Forming the Simple Past of Regular Verbs
For regular verbs, we simply add -ed to the base form.
| Base Verb | - Simple Past |
|---|---|
| work | worked |
| clean | cleaned |
| dance | danced |
| open | opened |
✨ Spelling Rules
✅ If the verb ends in -e, just add -d:
→ love → loved | smile → smiled
✅ If the verb ends in a consonant + y, change -y to -ied:
→ study → studied | carry → carried
✅ For CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) verbs, double the final consonant:
→ plan → planned | stop → stopped
